What I am looking for is to spend like 2-3k on a 10k car. Is that possible with auto auctions, or should I stop wasting my time, and just ferget about these?

Definately avoid auto auctions unless you are a mechanic and know what to look for. For 5K, you are going to get an old car, which might be OK. If you have a CAR Max near you, they have a Value Max line that would be about that much. Otherwise, a private seller with inpsection by a mechanic.
