do you think this a good idea? i live in ny. i heard praises about auto auctions. i wnat to spend 5K on fairly reliable car b/c i have 3 small kids (6,4,2). want use the car to take them to school and run errands. take a long drive occasionally. thinking about a camry or some american large car.
If you know everything there is to know about cars and can spot all the defects at a glance, proceed with caution. If not, stay away from auctions and used car dealers who buy from public auto auctions.
I am looking for information about which auctions have great deals. I know there is a risk with them, but I am looking for legit auto auctions with cheaper prices than you can get with a great deal in the newspaper if there are auctions like that with low starting prices, or no minimum bids where I know it may be rare, since people bid up the prices, but I am looking for some with the possibility of such.

Definately avoid auto auctions unless you are a mechanic and know what to look for. For 5K, you are going to get an old car, which might be OK. If you have a CAR Max near you, they have a Value Max line that would be about that much. Otherwise, a private seller with inpsection by a mechanic.
